Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology, both are widely accepted courses.
  • BE is more knowledge based and B Tech is more on practical.
  • Broadly, Universities offer BE and Institutes offer B Tech.

Students who have passed 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects, can opt for different courses in Engineering and on completion of the Course are awarded Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor or Technology in the specified sector.
Admission to Undergraduate Courses in Engineering is through national level entrance test- Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
Admission to prime Institutes like IITs is based on marks in JEE, JEE (Main).
Wards of serving/retired Army personnel can get admission in Army Institute of Technology, before any others try for the same.

Course duration is 4 years.
Then there are Integrated Courses such as : B.E./B.Tech. + M.E./M.Tech; B.E./B.Tech. + MBA, which are of five years.

Aerospace Engineering:
Aerospace Engineering is the new name for Aeronautical Engineering. It is about study of the design, development, and production of air and spacecraft.
Depending on specialization, there could be Aeronautical Electronic Engineers, Aeronautical Mechanical Engineers.
Agricultural engineering:
It has vast field, including Aquaculture, Land Farming, Forestry. With Agriculture as a need based element of prosperity, there is huge scope, however, the present student community is not much attracted to this sector.
Automotive engineering:
It is about researching, designing and developing vehicles, the heart of any vehicle. The study area also include: Designing new products, Finding solutions to engineering problems and Planning and designing new production processes.
Chemical engineering:
Such Engineers are needed in large-scale production of pharmaceuticals, development of new semiconductor technologies; alternative energy sources etc. and also in research and development.
Civil Engineering:
One of the old segment of Engineering, much in demand in construction, ports, airports, railways etc.

Computer Science Engineering:
It is most wanted Course, in all Service Industries like Banking, Airlines, Insurance, Railways, Hospitals, where software solutions are needed. It is equally important in manufacturing and production units as well.
Electrical Engineering:
A prime field of requirement in Electricity, Power, Transport and in almost all infrastructure related organizations.
Electrical & Electronic Engineering:
Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that is generally required in any living conditions, as the same is applicable to commonly needed transport, healthcare, construction and house hold equipments.
Instrumentation Engineering:
It is a specialized field, into the science of measurement and control of process.
Required both in general engineering concerns and also in design devices like blood glucose monitors, aircraft sensors, smoke detectors, or dynamometers that measure torque.
Marine Engineering:
A Specialized category, related to design and construction of seagoing vessels, like boats, ships etc.
A Marine Engineer would be maintaining all equipments in a ship. So the education calls for study on both mechanical and electrical related topics. Depending on his expertise, he could be on board of tanker vessels, passenger vessels etc. or shipyards, marine engineering firms, merchant navies.
Unlike other Engineering Degree holders, the Marine Engineers may have to be away from home for long time, as part of work assignments.
Mechanical Engineering:
Mention any industry, this category of Engineers are needed. Demand is more in Steel, Heavy Engineering, Railways etc.

Mining Engineering:

Petroleum Engineering:
